Day 304 Bible Readings for November 2 - 1 Corinthians 7:30-31 (NLT)

1 Corinthians 7-8, Psalm 144

1 Corinthians 7:30-31 (NLT)

“Those who weep or who rejoice or who buy things should not be absorbed by their weeping or their joy or their possessions. Those who use the things of the world should not become attached to them. For this world as we know it will soon pass away.

In 1 Corinthians 7:30–31, Paul tells the church in Corinth that the Lord is coming soon and the world will pass away. Believers need not get caught up in things on this earth. Paul said not to become too attached to their sorrow, joy, or possessions. Everything in this world is temporary, and believers cannot stake their identity or security in these things.

One Bible commentary I read noted that Paul was emphasizing that true and lasting joy is rooted only in the Lord. If a believer's joy comes only from favorable circumstances, then when their circumstances change, they will lose their joy. The same is true of possessions. Everything is received from Father-God, and believers are just stewards of these things. Like joy, earthly resources cannot sustain the soul or guarantee the future, nor can believers depend on them. Our dependence must be on the Lord, who is always there for believers even when their circumstances change.

These verses reminded me that if I treat anything in this world as a source of security, I will be disappointed. My circumstances and possessions can change, but only my love for the Lord is eternal. If the Lord is coming soon, then everything in the world is temporary, and I cannot become too attached to these things. One Bible commentary I read noted that possessions are tools for kingdom service, and they are never the measure of life. My life can only be measured by my covenant relationship with the Lord.

If these verses resonate with you—if you feel drawn to place your faith in Jesus Christ, the One who is the source of our joy and whom we can always depend upon—this may be your moment. Open your heart to Him. Speak to Him in prayer. Tell Him you trust Him and desire to walk with Him. He is faithful, and He will meet you exactly where you are.

Heavenly Father, I give You my life. Please forgive me for all my sins and wash me clean through the blood of Jesus. I believe in my heart that You raised Jesus from the dead, and I confess with my mouth that Jesus is my Lord and Savior. I receive Your forgiveness and the gift of salvation. Thank You, Lord—I am saved, I am forgiven, I am clean, and I am made new in Jesus' name. Amen.

If you prayed this prayer, welcome to the family of Father-God! I encourage you to find and join a Holy Spirit–filled, full-Gospel, Bible-based church where you can grow in your faith and experience the Lord's love, signs, wonders, and miracles in your life.
