Daniel 10-12, Psalm 56
Daniel 10:12-13 (NLT)
“Then he said, ‘Don’t be afraid, Daniel. Since the first day you began to pray for understanding and to humble yourself before your God, your request has been heard in heaven. I have come in answer to your prayer. But for twenty-one days the spirit prince of the kingdom of Persia blocked my way. Then Michael, one of the archangels, came to help me, and I left him there with the spirit prince of the kingdom of Persia.’”
In Daniel 10:12–13, a divine messenger spoke to Daniel and told him that the Lord had heard his prayer from the moment he began to pray. The divine messenger came in answer to Daniel's prayer but was delayed for twenty-one days because of a spiritual conflict in the unseen realm.
These verses remind me that Father-God is attentive to the prayers of His children. The divine messenger told Daniel that his prayer was heard by Father-God as soon as he began to pray. These verses also teach me the importance of perseverance in prayer and of seeking to understand the Lord's will. Daniel continued seeking the Lord until he received an answer. We cannot fully understand why some prayers are delayed in being answered. The divine messenger's account reminds us that there are spiritual realities beyond what we can see that may oppose the Lord's work in our lives and in the world.
These verses teach me to persevere in prayer and not to become discouraged. I can trust that the Lord's purposes will always prevail, even if there are spiritual reasons why the answer to my prayers may be delayed. The Lord is not reluctant to hear or answer our prayers. Father-God always hears our prayers, and His plans and purposes will ultimately prevail.

“O my God, lean down and listen to me. Open your eyes and see our despair. See how your city—the city that bears your name—lies in ruins. We make this plea, not because we deserve help, but because of your mercy. O Lord, hear. O Lord, forgive. O Lord, listen and act! For your own sake, do not delay, O my God, for your people and your city bear your name.”
In Daniel 9:18–19, Daniel interceded and prayed to the Lord after reading Jeremiah's prophecy that Jerusalem would lie desolate for seventy years. After confessing Israel's sin, Daniel praised the righteousness of Father-God. Then he pleaded with the Lord to have mercy on Jerusalem. Daniel appealed to the Lord's name, reminding Him that Jerusalem and His people were called by His name.
One Bible commentary I read noted that Daniel appealed to the Lord's compassion in his prayer. Daniel relied on Father-God's unchanging character of mercy rather than on the righteousness of the people of Israel. His prayer was rooted in repentance, acknowledging the sins of the people. Daniel had confidence that the Lord would intervene because of His promises and faithful nature.
These verses remind me that when I pray to the Lord, I need to be humble, acknowledge my failures, and seek Father-God's forgiveness. I need to pray like Daniel, with confidence in the Lord's compassion, mercy, and promise of restoration. I need to trust in the Lord's faithful nature rather than in my own goodness. My prayers should be an expression of the deep trust and dependence I have on Father-God.

Daniel 5:22-23 (NLT)
“You are his successor, Belshazzar, and you knew all this, yet you have not humbled yourself. For you have proudly defied the Lord of heaven and have had these cups from his Temple brought before you. You and your nobles and your wives and concubines have been drinking wine from them while praising gods of silver, gold, bronze, iron, wood, and stone—gods that neither see nor hear nor know anything at all. But you have not honored the God who gives you the breath of life and controls your destiny!”
In Daniel 5:22–23, Daniel responded to King Belshazzar by explaining the meaning of the writing on the wall. Daniel said that even though Belshazzar knew what had happened to his father, King Nebuchadnezzar, he did not learn from it. Instead, Belshazzar proudly dishonored the Lord by using the cups from the temple in Jerusalem to drink wine while praising false gods. The king failed to honor the Lord, who is sovereign and had humbled his father, Nebuchadnezzar.
One Bible commentary I read noted that Belshazzar's story is an example of how pride can lead to a person's downfall. The new king was given an opportunity to learn from his father's mistakes, but he chose not to pay attention or learn from them. Daniel also told Belshazzar that he failed to glorify the Lord, who is sovereign over all things. The new king acted as though he was not subject to the Lord's power and sovereignty as his father had been, and he paid the price for it.
These verses remind me of the consequences of pride and of thinking that the Lord does not see what I do or what is in my heart. Daniel also taught me that I need to honor and glorify Father-God because He created me and is sovereign over me and over all the world. I need to examine my actions and thoughts to make sure I am not acting in pride and that I am continually following the guidance of the Holy Spirit in my life.

“Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego replied, ‘O Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you. If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God whom we serve is able to save us. He will rescue us from your power, Your Majesty. But even if he doesn’t, we want to make it clear to you, Your Majesty, that we will never serve your gods or worship the gold statue you have set up.’”
In Daniel 3:16–18, King Nebuchadnezzar brought Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego before him to find out why they refused to obey his decree. The three men said they did not need to defend themselves. Instead, they declared the existence and power of the Lord, the God of Israel. They said that Father-God was able to rescue them, but even if He did not, their faith was not contingent on His intervention. Then they told the king they would never serve his gods or worship the golden statue he had set up.

These verses remind me that when I feel pressured by society to be quiet about or hide my faith, I need to take inspiration from Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. While my life has never been at risk, there is always the possibility of being criticized, canceled, or receiving a barrage of unkind comments on social media. These verses remind me that in those moments I need to trust more fully in the Lord's plan for my life, whatever the outcome. Although Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were ultimately delivered from the fiery furnace, they chose to trust the Lord before they knew how their story would end.
