Day 297 Bible Readings for October 26 - Romans 11:22-23 (NLT)

Romans 9-11, Psalm 137

Romans 11:22-23 (NLT)

“Notice how God is both kind and severe. He is severe toward those who disobeyed, but kind to you if you continue to trust in his kindness. But if you stop trusting, you also will be cut off. And if the people of Israel turn from their unbelief, they will be grafted in again, for God has the power to graft them back into the tree.”

In Romans 11:22–23, Paul reminds believers of the Lord's character. He tells the church in Rome that the Lord is both kind and severe. Father-God is severe toward those who persist in their unbelief, cutting them off from the tree. But He will be kind to those who have come to faith through Christ, provided they continue to trust in His kindness. If they cease to trust in the Lord, He will also cut them off Paul reminds believers that if the people of Israel turn from their unbelief, the Lord has the power to graft them back into the olive tree.

These verses remind believers of the Lord's merciful character. The Lord will judge those who persist in unbelief and disobey His laws and commandments, just as He judged people in the Old Testament for their unbelief. But the Lord is merciful, and if people, Jew or Gentile, return to Him, He will forgive them and welcome them back into a covenant relationship. The Old Testament is full of stories and examples of how the children of Abraham had fallen away from the Lord and how Father-God restored them when they repented of their unbelief and sins.

Every time I read the Old Testament stories of how the children of Israel behaved toward the Lord after He rescued them from slavery, starvation, defeat, and other challenges, I am always amazed at the Lord's merciful nature. The Lord sent the prophets to warn them to repent of their disobedience, but the people did not pay attention. The Lord gave His people multiple chances to repent and ask for forgiveness, and no matter how many times they disobeyed, the Lord welcomed them back and restored them when they repented. Whenever I feel like the Lord might not forgive me for the times I stumble and fall, I read the stories in the Old Testament to remind myself of Father-God's merciful nature. I am reassured of His mercy and His power to restore me to a covenant relationship with Him.

If these verses resonate with you—if you feel drawn to place your faith in Jesus Christ, the One whose mercy and grace have the power to restore us to Him when we fall—this may be your moment. Open your heart to Him. Speak to Him in prayer. Tell Him you trust Him and desire to walk with Him. He is faithful, and He will meet you exactly where you are.

Heavenly Father, I give You my life. Please forgive me for all my sins and wash me clean through the blood of Jesus. I believe in my heart that You raised Jesus from the dead, and I confess with my mouth that Jesus is my Lord and Savior. I receive Your forgiveness and the gift of salvation. Thank You, Lord—I am saved, I am forgiven, I am clean, and I am made new in Jesus' name. Amen.

If you prayed this prayer, welcome to the family of Father-God! I encourage you to find and join a Holy Spirit–filled, full-Gospel, Bible-based church where you can grow in your faith and experience the Lord's love, signs, wonders, and miracles in your life.
