Nehemiah 10-11, Psalm 63
Nehemiah 11:1-2 (NLT)
“The leaders of the people were living in Jerusalem, the holy city. A tenth of the people from the other towns of Judah and Benjamin were chosen by sacred lots to live there, too, while the rest stayed where they were. And the people commended everyone who volunteered to resettle in Jerusalem.”
In Nehemiah 11:1–2, the leaders and one-tenth of the people chosen by lot moved to Jerusalem. Those who moved demonstrated their willingness to serve the Lord’s purposes and their commitment to the restoration of worship at the temple. The city was still being rebuilt and faced threats from surrounding enemies, so moving there was an act of faith. The people blessed everyone who willingly offered themselves to live in Jerusalem.
These verses remind me that although the people had finished rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem and had renewed themselves spiritually, the work of restoration was not yet complete. One Bible commentary I read noted that Jerusalem had been largely deserted for more than seventy years. The people who moved there had to endure some measure of hardship and discomfort to accomplish a great work for the Lord’s kingdom. They had to start over, rebuild their homes and businesses, and leave friends and family behind to settle in Jerusalem.
These verses teach me that sometimes doing the work of Father-God requires personal sacrifice. The Lord needs willing people, not just observers, to do the work of His kingdom. I’ve also learned that serving the Lord sometimes means voluntarily accepting inconvenience or sacrifice because something needs to be done. Whenever I serve in church, I remind myself what a privilege it is to serve the Lord and His people. I want to serve Him cheerfully and faithfully, knowing that the Lord sees and values the service we offer to Him.

Day 217 Bible Readings - Nehemiah 8:7-8 (NLT)

Nehemiah 8:7-8 (NLT)
“The Levites—Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, and Pelaiah—then instructed the people in the Law while everyone remained in their places. They read from the Book of the Law of God and clearly explained the meaning of what was being read, helping the people understand each passage.”
In Nehemiah 8:7–8, after Ezra completed reading the Book of the Law of Moses, the Levites explained and instructed the people so they could understand God's Law. Foreign cultures and languages had influenced many of those returning from exile in Babylon, and the people needed both the reading and the explanation of God's Word to reestablish their spiritual and cultural identity.
These verses remind me of the importance of both hearing and understanding God's Word. Spiritual leaders are needed to instruct and guide believers so they can gain understanding and apply the Lord's teachings to their lives. God's Word has the power to change people's hearts and transform their lives so they can faithfully live out their faith each day.
Reading these verses reminds me how important God's Word is for my spiritual growth and obedience. When I understand His Word, I can apply it to my life and allow it to transform me. These verses also show me that regularly engaging with God's Word leads to continual spiritual renewal. They also remind me of the importance of attending a church where a pastor faithfully teaches and explains the Bible so believers can better understand and apply it.

Day 216 Bible Readings - Nehemiah 6:8-9 (NLT)

Nehemiah 6:8-9 (NLT)
“I replied, ‘There is no truth in any part of your story. You are making up the whole thing.’ They were just trying to intimidate us, imagining that they could discourage us and stop the work. So I continued the work with even greater determination.”
In Nehemiah 6:8–9, Nehemiah received a letter from Sanballat, a Samaritan leader who opposed the rebuilding of Jerusalem's walls. The letter was an attempt to intimidate Nehemiah into stopping the work by spreading false rumors, false accusations, and slander. Nehemiah replied that Sanballat was making everything up. Instead of giving in to fear, Nehemiah immediately turned to the Lord in prayer and became even more determined to continue the work.
Nehemiah had the discernment to recognize that his enemy was using slander to create fear. He confronted Sanballat's lies and remained focused on the task Father-God had given him to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. Then Nehemiah prayed for divine strength. In other translations of verse 9, Nehemiah asks the Lord to strengthen his hands. He relied on Father-God rather than on his own strength. Nehemiah's prayer is an act of faith, asking the Lord to overcome human weakness.
These verses remind me to rely on the Lord for strength whenever I feel fear or face opposition. I need to stand firm in what I believe and in what the Lord has called me to do, even when I encounter criticism or slander. I need to pray to Father-God for strength and wisdom, then demonstrate my faith through obedience by continuing the work He has entrusted to me.

“They all made plans to come and fight against Jerusalem and throw us into confusion. But we prayed to our God and guarded the city day and night to protect ourselves.”
In Nehemiah 4:8–9, the people of Jerusalem faced opposition while rebuilding the city's walls under Nehemiah's leadership. Their enemies sought to stop the rebuilding of the walls, which were important for the protection and stability of Jerusalem. The restoration of the walls and the city symbolized the reestablishment of Jewish identity and worship. Nehemiah's response to the opposition was to lead the people in prayer and to take practical action by posting guards day and night for protection.
One Bible commentary I read noted that opposition often creates confusion and discouragement among God's people, distracting them from the work He has called them to do. As a result, they may become discouraged and stop moving forward in the work the Lord has called them to do.

Nehemiah also combined prayer with practical action by posting guards to protect the people. I need to put my faith into practice by taking action that reflects my trust in the Lord. While Father-God is sovereign, I also have a responsibility to faithfully do my part in carrying out His plans. Prayer does not replace faithful action; rather, prayer and action work together as we serve the Lord.
