Lamentations 1-2, Psalm 48
Lamentations 2:17 (NLT)
“But it is the Lord who did just as he planned. He has fulfilled the promises of disaster he made long ago. He has destroyed Jerusalem without mercy. He has caused her enemies to gloat over her and has given them power over her.”
Lamentations is traditionally attributed to the prophet Jeremiah, who witnessed the destruction of Jerusalem. In Lamentations 2:17, we read about the sovereignty of the Lord and His faithfulness to His Word. Father-God warned through the prophets that He would judge Jerusalem because the people had turned away from Him in sin and rebellion. The destruction of Jerusalem reminds us that the Lord's judgment is real and that there are consequences for turning away from Him.
These verses remind me that the prophecies in the Old Testament are trustworthy because the Lord fulfilled what He declared. Father-God repeatedly warned the people of Israel about what would happen if they did not repent. Over many years, He gave them countless opportunities to return to Him in covenant. Time and again, He showed mercy when the people humbled themselves and repented. But when they continually refused to listen, the Lord fulfilled what He had promised.
These verses also remind me that the Lord does not act out of impulse or uncontrolled anger but is always faithful to His Word. The people were warned repeatedly by the prophets about what was coming, yet they refused to listen. One Bible commentary I read noted that the destruction of Jerusalem fulfilled the covenant curses described in Deuteronomy 28. If that is true, then the covenant blessings promised for obedience in the same chapter are also trustworthy. I have seen in my own life that when I walk in obedience to the Lord, I experience His blessings each day.

I believe in my heart that You raised Jesus from the dead, and I confess with my mouth that Jesus is my Lord and Savior. I receive Your forgiveness and the gift of salvation. Thank You, Lord—I am saved, I am forgiven, I am clean, and I am made new in Jesus’ name. Amen.
