Lamentations 3, Psalm 49
Lamentations 3:21-22 (NLT)
“Yet I still dare to hope when I remember this: The faithful love of the Lord never ends! His mercies never cease.”
In Lamentations 3:21–22, Jeremiah finds hope by remembering the Lord’s past faithfulness and mercies in his life. In another translation, Jeremiah wrote that a remnant of Israel survived after the destruction of Jerusalem by the Babylonians, and their survival was solely due to Father-God’s mercy and grace, not because of any merit of the people.
One Bible commentary I read noted that hope is not passive. Having hope requires believers to actively recall the Lord’s promises, along with His past faithfulness and mercies. Even in the midst of suffering, we need to remember that we have not been completely consumed because of the Lord’s devotion to care for His children.
I have incorporated this practice into my own life. When I go through a challenging situation, I intentionally remind myself of all the blessings the Lord has bestowed on me. Thinking about how faithfully the Lord has cared for me over the years gives me hope that He will help me again, even in the midst of my present suffering. I tell myself, He didn't fail me all those other times—why would He fail me now?

Heavenly Father, I give You my life. Please forgive me for all my sins and wash me clean through the blood of Jesus. I believe in my heart that You raised Jesus from the dead, and I confess with my mouth that Jesus is my Lord and Savior. I receive Your forgiveness and the gift of salvation. Thank You, Lord—I am saved, I am forgiven, I am clean, and I am made new in Jesus’ name. Amen.
