1 Chronicles 18-21, Psalm 68
1 Chronicles 21:24-25 (NLT)
“But King David replied to Araunah, ‘No, I insist on buying it for the full price. I will not take what is yours and give it to the Lord. I will not present burnt offerings that have cost me nothing!’ So David gave Araunah 600 pieces of gold in payment for the threshing floor.”
In 1 Chronicles 21:24–25, David told Araunah the Jebusite that he wanted to buy his land at full price. Araunah had willingly offered the land and his threshing floor to King David when he learned that David wanted to build an altar there to stop the plague caused by David’s sin of taking a census. But David knew that if it did not cost him something, then the altar would not represent a true sacrifice to Father-God. David’s actions also demonstrated his repentance and integrity and showed his willingness to take responsibility as the leader of his people.
These verses remind believers that true and genuine worship often involves personal investment and sacrifice. As king, David could have accepted the land offered to him by Araunah. But David knew he had sinned when he took the census, and he wanted to demonstrate his repentance before the Lord. As a leader, David showed integrity by insisting on paying the full price for the land. This location would eventually become the site of the future Temple in Jerusalem, on Mount Moriah, which is also traditionally associated with Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice Isaac.
These verses teach me that my offerings to the Lord need to be meaningful and sacrificial. I must also give willingly, rather than offering something out of compulsion or convenience. When my offering comes from repentance and a desire to restore my relationship with the Lord, I should be willing to offer Him my best. These verses also show me that the Lord is merciful and ready to forgive when I sin. Father-God provided a way for David to stop the plague and restore his relationship with Him.

Heavenly Father, I give You my life. Please forgive me for all my sins and wash me clean through the blood of Jesus. I believe in my heart that You raised Jesus from the dead, and I confess with my mouth that Jesus is my Lord and Savior. I receive Your forgiveness and the gift of salvation. Thank You, Lord—I am saved, I am forgiven, I am clean, and I am made new in Jesus’ name. Amen.
